Hazel Mae Hamilton Large
Hazel M. Large, 96, passed away peacefully November 14 at the Village of St. Edward, Fairlawn, Ohio.
Born September 28, 1912, in rural Hunt County, Texas, she was the eldest of three children born to Herbert B. and Martha Jane White Hamilton. She married Willis "Bill" Franklin Large, in Quapaw, Oklahoma in 1930. In 1940 Bill joined the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and the couple relocated several times during the next decade as he moved up the ranks of the patrol. Hazel held a variety of jobs in the small towns they lived in and was always active in a Baptist church as a choir member and Sunday School teacher. In 1950, Lieutenant Large, a popular speaker, began working in the patrol's public relations department in Oklahoma City. The couple bought a home in Bethany, Okla. in 1951 and adopted their only child, Paula, in 1953. Hazel was widowed in 1954 when Bill died at age 47. She went to work for the Bethany Police Department as a dispatcher in 1959, later serving as secretary to the chief of police. An excellent seamstress, she enjoyed doing ceramics for a time and was an avid gardener. She retired in 1977. In the 1980s, Hazel was thrilled to become "Grandma" to four grandchildren in Akron and moved to Fairlawn in 1993 to be near them. She became a beloved member of Broadman Baptist Church in Cuyahoga Falls and gained many dear friends at St. Edward's. Hazel gave up driving at 92, but remained active and independent for several more years.
She is survived by her daughter, Paula Large Guran, Akron; son-in-law, Paul E. Guran, Atwater; granddaughter, Karis Guran, Akron; grandson, Mark and granddaughter-in-law Allyson Schmidt Guran, Hoffman Estates, Ill.; grandsons, Andrew Guran, attending George Washington University in Washington, DC, and Erik Guran, attending Arizona State University in Phoenix, Ariz.; and "almost granddaughter-in-law" Katie McCans.
