Helen Joanne Slocum Wyant Fifer, died peacefully April 7, 2011 at home.
A native Akronite, Helen was born on January 13, 1925. She attended Miami University and received a bachelor's degree. Helen married James Nelson Wyant Jr. in 1949 and moved to Buffalo, New York. They added to the family in 1954 with son, Robert James Wyant and in 1956 with daughter, Laurie Joanne Wyant. Helen became widowed in 1962 at which time she returned to school to complete her master's at the University of Buffalo. At the same time, she began working in the Student Testing and Research department, eventually obtaining the position of Director. She returned to Akron after retiring and cared for her parents, Joe and Mickey, until they passed on. During this time, she met and eventually married James Clayton Lowell Fifer.
Helen and Lowell volunteered for many charitable causes including, The Red Cross, Edwin Shaw, Lighthouse and the U.C.C. hunger program. She was an active member of the Akron Woman's City Club, Fort Nightly Club of Akron, P.E.O. and was a member of Bath United Church of Christ.
Preceded in death by her husband of 23 years, J. Lowell Fifer last September; she is survived by her son, Robert Wyant; daughter, Laurie Wyant-Zenni; and Laurie's children, Christopher, Jennifer and Megan Fitzwater; Laurie's husband, Edward Zenni and his two children, Laura and Christian Zenni; father of her grandchildren, John Fitzwater; Lowell's son, Ronald Kay; Lowell's daughter, Linda Egert Tony; sister-in-law, Marjorie Slocum and her family; and many friends.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. SATURDAY, April 16th at Bath United Church of Christ, 3980 W. Bath Rd., with Rev. Mark Frey officiating. Friends may visit with the family an hour before the service. Those who wish may make donations to Hospice of V.N.S., 3358 Ridgewood Rd., Akron 44333.
