Helen P Johnson (nee Wydo)
Helen P Johnson, surrounded by her family, peacefully went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 17, 2016. Helen was born on September 7, 1916, in Morrisdale, Pennsylvania to Hungarian immigrants, Frank and Barbara Wydo (Vajda). She graduated Valedictorian from Morrisdale High School, graduated from Philadelphia General Hospital School of Nursing as an RN, and also from Philadelphia School of the Bible (Cairn University). She accepted the Lord as her personal Savior in 1937.
Helen married the love of her life, Albert E. Johnson on September 14, 1940. She served alongside Albert as a faithful pastor's wife in West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio, raising 3 children, Helen "Betsy", Lois and Keith. She was very active in their churches, organizing and developing Christian Education from children's ministries to college and career Sunday School classes. She taught Junior Church, directed Vacation Bible Schools, taught visual aids at Akron Bible Institute, sang in the choir and played chord harmonica in the harmonica band, founded by her husband.
Helen continued her nursing career with The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company where she served as Head Nurse of Plant 2 Infirmary. Goodyear sent Helen to China to represent them in developing the field of Occupational Health Nursing; where she conducted seminars that were printed, published and distributed to the medical professionals in China. Helen retired from The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company after 25 years of service. She remained an active volunteer at Haven of Rest, Women and Children's Ministry conducting weekly Bible classes. She also held Bible studies during her time in Concordia at Sumner. Helen always gave her praise to the Lord for all that He has been able to accomplish through her and she served Him with a heart of love.
Helen is preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Barbara Wydo (Vajda); her faithful husband Albert; her siblings Steve, Elizabeth, Frank, John, Bertha, Ethel, William (died as an infant), Lewis and George; and her grandson Kalvin. She is survived by her children, Helen " Betsy " Thorpe, Lois (Gary) Moosey, Keith (Diane) Johnson; her grandchildren, Lauri Thorpe (Mark Iati); Leslie Ann, David (Jennifer) Johnson, Kathleen (Kurt) Wagar; Lisa (John) Consilio; 11 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandson, and many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
Visitation will be on Saturday, January 23, 2016 at 10:00 am, at West Hill Baptist Church, 605 N. Revere Rd, Fairlawn, with a Memorial Service to follow at 11:00am. Pastor Aaron Varner will be officiating along with Rev. Gary Moosey and Howard Silverman. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Haven of Rest, Women and Children's Ministry, Akron Ohio ( www.havenofrest.org ).
