Helen I. Manos, 86, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2014.
Helen was born in Steubenville, Ohio to George N. and Kalliope G. Mavromatis and moved to Mansfield, Ohio at an early age. After graduating from Mansfield Senior High School, she enrolled at The Juilliard School in New York City to study voice and then went to the University of Cincinnati's Conservatory of Music where she received a Fine Arts Degree in Music. She also received a Masters Degree in Music Education from the University of Akron. After receiving her music degrees, Helen taught music in the Rupert (West Virginia), Revere and Bath School Systems. She married the love of her life, George T. Manos, in Mansfield, Ohio on August 15, 1954.
Helen was a member of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church where she sang in the choir and provided music instruction to the children in the Greek School and Sunday School programs. After all her children were grown, Helen worked at Don Drumm Studios, The Different Drummer. She also enjoyed working with philanthropic groups such as Philoptochos Melissa, AMHAS, TWIGS/HOPE, her children's PTA groups and with various groups within the Akron Auxiliary Bar Association.
Preceded in death by her parents, brother and sister-in-law, Nick and Regina Mavromatis, brother-in-law, Kosta Stravelakis and nephew, George Stravelakis. She is survived by her husband, George T. Manos; daughters June M. "Shelly" (Chris) Partis of Akron, and Kally M. (Bill) Bradshaw of Gahanna, Ohio; sons, Emanuel T. "Manny" (Michele) Manos of Poway, California and Jack G. (Yvonne) Manos of Fairlawn; and grandchildren, Eleni and William Bradshaw, Connor and Mikayla Manos, and Maia, George, Michael and Nicholas Manos. She also leaves a sister, Katherine K. Stravelakis of San Diego, California.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, July 11, 2014 at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 129 S. Union Street Akron, Ohio 44304, with Rev. Fr. Jerry Hall and Rev. Fr. Andrew Lentz officiating. She will lie in state one hour before services at the church. Interment will be at Mount Peace Cemetery. Friends may call at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Road, Thursday, July 10 from 5 to 8 p.m. with a Trisagion service at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Scholarship Fund or the Anthony Retikas, M.D. Memorial Scholarship Fund at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church.
