Helen Sweetser Yocum
Helen Sweetser Yocum died February 26, 2009 at her home.
Born Feb. 20, 1922 in Lakeview, Maine to Henry and Lillian Sweetser, she was a descendent of Seth Sweetser of Boston, Mass., from Tring, England in 1632. Helen graduated from Bucksport, Maine High School and attended Akron University Evening School.
A long time member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, she served in U.S. Coast Guard SPARS during World War II; was a member of Waves National Unit 21, B & W Women's Group and Art Club. She was an avid reader, especially biographies and mysteries, and was employed by Babcock and Wilcox, Barberton, Ohio.
Preceded in death by parents; husband, Paul Yocum; son, John Yocum; sister, Blanche Sweetser Noah; brothers, Lawrence Larry Sweetser and Harry Jones; she is survived by daughter, Kathleen DeBolt; daughter-in-law, Rebecca Yocum; grandsons, Sean Yocum, Aaron Yocum, Brian Yocum; granddaughters, Sarah DeBolt, Dr. Rebekah DeBolt; nieces, Nancy Noah-Bear, Anne Conlon, Jean Yuhasz, Carole Kreider, Janet Long, Phyllis Fassnacht, Cassandra Muller and Louise Aronow; three great nieces and one great nephew; brother -in- law, Robert Noah and Teddy the Cat.
A Memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1361 W. Market St., Akron 44313 or a charity of your choice. Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel
