Hilda Dixie Reiss

January 2, 1919 — April 13, 2011

Hilda "Dixie" Reiss, age 92, died peacefully, surrounded by family on April 13, 2011 at Park Village Health Care Center in Dover, Ohio.

She was born in Eau Gallie, Florida but lived her married life raising and caring for her family in Akron, Ohio until moving to Dover two years ago. A wonderful, caring and loving wife, mother and grandmother, Dixie loved her family and will be sadly missed by her devoted husband of 65 years, Dan Reiss; daughter, Diane Reid and her husband, Bill of Moorestown, N.J. and Callawassie Island, S.C.; daughter-in-law, Melinda Reiss of North Canton, Ohio; grandchildren, Scott Reid and his wife, Molly of Long Valley, N.J. and Lisa Reid of Naperville, IL, will sadly miss their "Nom" and Heather Reiss and Dan Reiss, both of North Canton, will sadly miss their "Beau". She also leaves great grandchildren, McKenna, Meghan and Colton Reid. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, sister and son, Dr. Dan Reiss.

After high school graduation, she attended and graduated from Mount Sinai Hospital Nursing School New York, N.Y. with the degree of registered nurse. In 1942 she enlisted and was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. After serving her country during World War II in North Africa, France, Italy and at Oliver General Hospital in Augusta, Ga., she was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain. She was a life member of the Women's Auxiliary Board of Summit County Children Services and a past member of the Akron Women's City Club.

Family and friends may call at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Road, Akron on Sunday, April 17th from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral and burial will be private. Contributions may be made in memory of Hilda Reiss to the Tuscarawas County University Foundation, KSU Tuscarawas Nursing Program or the Women's Auxiliary of Summit County Children Services.
