Hugo Wendlandt, 88, of Stow, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2018 in Akron, OH.
Born on June 5, 1930 in Brazil to Wanda and Augusto; he was the last remaining child of their 12 children.
Survived by wife of 51 years, Ingrid; children, Sylvia (Matt) Lauener and Tony (Mikelann) Wendlandt; grandchildren, Nicholas and Adaline; and numerous nephews and nieces in the United States as well as Brazil.
He immigrated by himself to the Akron area in 1960. He was a long-time resident of Stow. Hugo embodied the immigrant lifestyle - work hard for your family. He married Ingrid in 1967. Limited in his education opportunities in Brazil, he was able to still find an occupation that he enjoyed and supported his family, including encouraging his children to achieve their goals. His primary occupation was a mold benchman at various shops, retiring from Akro-Mold in 1992.
Since he was a hard worker, Hugo did not develop many outside interests. Many remember his love for old-time Westerns and game shows. He could always be found at the German-American Club Oktoberfest enjoying a beer. He enjoyed traveling to visit family in Brazil, Germany, Canada, and across the United States. He was a fan of soccer (although he called it football) and enjoyed bicycling in his retirement. At the peak of his biking (in his late 60s to early 70s), he would bike 20 to 40 miles a day.
He became a citizen of the United States in his 80s. He was fiercely proud of being able to become a citizen since it required learning of U.S. history and government structure. The Certificate of Naturalization is proudly displayed on the mantel.
Hugo will be truly missed by his family and friends.
