Irene Dunham Becker, 93, passed away November 27, 2010.
Born August 12, 1917 in Akron, she was a graduate of West High School and attended the University of Akron and Akron Business College in the evenings while working at O'Neil's Department Store. In 1941, she and George L. Bud Becker Jr. were married and enjoyed 46 years together until his death in 1987.
Irene was an active community volunteer and served on several boards. In 1955, she joined the Women's Board of the Akron General Medical Center. In 1964, she was named Director of Volunteers at Akron General Medical Center, a position she held and loved until her retirement in 1984. After her retirement, she returned to volunteering in the hospital gift shop and received her 3, 000 hour pin in 1997.
She leaves behind to celebrate her life and cherish her memory daughter and son-in-law, Gini and Richard Paige; granddaughter, Diana Sheeks; great-grandchildren, Paige, Preston and Holden Sheeks; sister-in-law, Virginia Ritchie; nieces, Ann Cole and Mary Regueiro; nephew, Larry Ritchie and her two ``adopted' daughters, Susan Waggoner and Jean Thompson.
The family wishes to thank the staff on the second floor at Rockynol - The Ledges and VNS Hospice for their special care and compassion.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, December 2, 2010 at 11 a.m. in the chapel at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1361 W. Market St., Akron, Ohio, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to VNS Hospice, Akron General Medical Center Women's Board or charity of choice.
