Jack Marshall

June 10, 1923 — February 15, 2016

Jack Marshall, 92, was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, and died at his home in Bath, Ohio, on February 15, 2016.

Preceded in death by his wife, Jacqueline Marshall (nee Duke) and his parents, Nell (nee Sams) and Hubert Marshall; he is survived by his brother-in-law, Tom (Juanita) Duke; his niece, Terrill (Gregg) Mervis; and great niece, Grace Mervis; and his cousins, Jill (Wendell) Horn and family.

As a youngster, he developed a love of East Tennessee's mountains, streams and lakes and of nature, in general. That stayed with him throughout his life. Marshall graduated from Knoxville Central High School in 1941. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served three years with the all-volunteer Motor Torpedo Boat service. After patrols with squadrons 2, 3 and 10 in the Solomon Islands and New Guinea in 1943 and 1944, he returned to the PT training base in Melville, Rhode Island, as a gunnery instructor. Marshall was discharged the day after Thanksgiving in 1945, a day he always referred to as "most appropriate."

He enrolled at the University of Tennessee in 1946 and graduated in 1949 with a bachelor's degree in Journalism. After a time as a newspaper reporter and editor in Tennessee, he joined the public relations department of The General Tire & Rubber Co. During a 30-year career at General, Marshall held various jobs, culminating as tire division advertising manager in 1973 and as corporate director of public relations and advertising in 1976. He retired in 1983 from a job he had enjoyed, working with people he liked or, as he joked, "at least most of them."

Marshall - who always considered himself among the luckiest of men - said his good fortune peaked absolutely in 1954 when he and Jackie Duke were married. They moved to Bath Twp. in 1958 and spent many happy, involved, active years there, including Marshall's volunteer work for the Bath Homeowner's Association and Jackie's two terms as Bath Twp. trustee.

The family would like to thank Summa at Home Hospice for their care and compassion.
