Jack A. Rodgers, Akron native and long-time resident of Ft Lauderdale, FL, passed away on March 17, 2018 at age 98.
Jack grew up in Akron and eventually joined Yankee Lines, a trucking company founded by his parents Howard and Florence. Along with his sister, Gayle, the four of them grew the company into a large concern, serving the markets of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and points beyond. After the company was sold in the mid-1960's, Jack went on to found two heavy-hauling companies. Ultimately, he bought a marina in Ft Lauderdale, Florida.
In 1945, Jack married long-time sweetheart, Dorothy Griesinger. They remained together until Dorothy's death in 2007. Together, they were very active in the Akron social scene, and were supporters of many local charity and volunteer organizations.
Jack was an avid boater. He loved to sail and, with Dorothy and their children, Brock and Bridget, spent every weekend sailing the Great Lakes from the Catawba Island Club. Jack also loved Florida and the family spent part of each winter in Ft Lauderdale.
After their children were grown, Jack and Dorothy decided to leave Akron and relocate to Ft Lauderdale. Jack owned a large marina there and ran it, together with his son, Brock, and father-in-law, A Paul Griesinger. When Jack retired, he retained ownership of the marina and leased it to another company. Though officially retired, he remained an active participant in the business until 2006.
Following the death of his wife in 2007, Jack moved to Wellington, Florida, to be closer to his daughter. Ultimately, he and Bridget shared a residence in Loxahatchee, Florida.
Jack was an active member of the Shriners in Akron, joining Tadmor Temple. He was also a member of the Akron Rotary Club. In Ft Lauderdale, he became a member of The Restless Weasels.
