James Thomas Anich

May 7, 1962 — September 4, 2017

James Thomas Anich lived for 55 years and died beloved, respected, and lamented. He was born on May 7th, 1962 in Akron, Ohio to Marilyn (nee Flanick) Anich Smith and Eli Anich (now deceased) and is survived by his mother, his adoring wife of 25 glorious years, Tamera (Cigler); his daughters, Madeline and Audrey; and his brothers, Edward and Robert.
Jim was raised in Akron by his mother and maternal grandparents, Graham and Olive Flanick. Graham provided Jim with the role model for what a man, husband, and father should be. Because his mother exposed him to a rich education and range of interests including music, dance, cooking and art, he became active in theater and music at Firestone High School. Jim graduated from University of Akron, serving as president of Delta Tau Delta fraternity for two terms. He also sang with the Akron Symphony Chorus. His love of leadership and the arts is reflected in these same passions in his daughters.
After graduation, Jim began employment with Allstate Insurance Company where he remained for over 25 years, with a career that afforded him the opportunity to work with many wonderful friends and colleagues that he respected. Recently, he took on a new opportunity at Verizon where he continued to build his network of respect colleagues. He was an active member of Saint Paul's Episcopal Church in Akron for over 25 years.
After their marriage, Jim and Tamera purchased their first home in west Akron, where they remained close to their parents. Jim's gratitude for his family was voiced daily. He was especially proud of his daughters and the accomplished and intelligent young women they have become. The family eventually fulfilled Jim's goal, articulated since he was 8 years old, of building his own dream house. While he loved to travel with his wife and daughters, (having enjoyed trips to California wine country, Rome for his brother Robert's wedding, and Paris with his family and dear friends), he loved time at home most. He enjoyed spending time reading in front of the fire, talking or reading to his daughters, basking in the presence of his family. He loved to cook great food for family and friends in his excellent kitchen, share a glass of wine or cocktail near the fireplace, and enjoy the beautiful wooded surroundings. As a family tradition, he helped prepare a feast for the Serbian part of his family each year with cousin Jane (Alexandra) Hull.
Jim began running to allow his daughters to cross the finish line with him at the Akron Marathon, something they had seen friends do in the past. He would do anything for his ladies! He fell in love with running for the health benefits, psychological benefits, sometimes social benefits (thanks to the Breakfast Club!) and the wonderful sense of accomplishment after a marathon or a good daily run. Jim was preparing for his 13th Akron Marathon on August 19th.. After running 20 miles on the Towpath with friends, he continued on solo and suffered coronary arrest while finishing his run alone. He was discovered by doctors biking on the Towpath and was provided assistance by them, the park service, and EMS personnel. Although his heart was repaired, he succumbed to a permanent coma because of extended lack of oxygen to his brain. He died peacefully on September 4th while under hospice care. It would give him some comfort in knowing that other people's lives may be improved by his choice as a donor, a testament to his inherent generosity.
I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. (II Timothy 1: 7)
A brother's remembrance: Jim was an honorable man who acted with compassion and integrity. He was a counselor to all that knew him. His words were honest and to the point. His deeds were charitable and kind. He was fiercely loyal to family and friends. Jim was proud of his children and all that they accomplished. He was devoted to his wife. He held his head high with the pride befitting a man whose life is built on acts of genuine character. Jim embraced each day with his shoulders back, bright blue eyes looking forward, and a broad smile on his face. He walked with the swagger of confidence. Although Jim did not suffer fools gladly, there was never malice in his heart, as his compassion was limitless. A beloved husband, proud father, respectful son, steadfast brother, and willing friend, he is to be honored with the love and remembrance befitting his character. We celebrate his memory and the time we had with him.
There will be a memorial service on Saturday, September 23rd at 3 o'clock at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1361 W. Market St., Akron, Ohio 44313. Reception following at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to the charity of your choice, with suggestions as follows: The Cleveland Orchestra, The Ohio & Erie Canalway Association, or The Justin T.
