James Barton Hunter

April 5, 1954 — April 23, 2017

James Barton Hunter - a man with an abiding love for his family - passed away on April 23rd, 2017.

Born April 5th, 1954 in Akron, Ohio, Jim was a 1972 graduate of Western Reserve Academy where he played football and was the captain of the school's first lacrosse team. He attended the University of Virginia and earned his undergraduate degree from Case Western Reserve University. Jim was a certified public accountant, served as a member of the of Board of Directors of Valley Savings Bank, and was President of First Akron Development Corporation which was instrumental in the development of several residential condominium communities in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. In recent years, he took great joy in the award-winning volunteer work he performed at Akron Children's Hospital.

An avid cyclist, Jim loved riding in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and participated in many long distance rides which raised funds for an array of charitable causes. But Jim was never happier than when he was on Anna Maria Island, Florida - a Gulf Coast barrier island he visited frequently - enjoying the opportunity to cycle, swim, and go shelling.

Jim's later-life health challenges never dampened his spirits as he was always upbeat and focused on his family members - all of whom he deeply loved.

Preceded in death by his parents, John and Kathryn Hunter; Jim is survived by his daughters, Lindsay Hunter of New York, New York and Lauren Hunter of Moorpark, California and their mother, Susan Hunter of Aurora, Ohio. Jim is also survived by his siblings, David Hunter [Margaret] of Silver Lake, Ohio and Ann Durr [James] of Silver Lake, Ohio; and nieces, Marie Hunter of Bradenton, Florida, Helen Hunter of Portland, Oregon, Katie Durr of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and nephew, Joey Durr of Silver Lake, Ohio - and his faithful cat, "J.B.", a feline he light-heartedly named after himself.

Private family services have been held. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Akron Children's Hospital, 1 Perkins Square, Akron, Ohio 44308.
