JANICE JENITIS

 Jan graduated from Cuyahoga Falls High School and obtained a BA in Sociology from the University of Akron.

Jan had a life-long love of Girl Scouting. She was an avid scout and volunteer at Camp Ledgewood as a student and worked professionally in Ohio and North Carolina in various positions with the organization. Her dream of living in Alaska came true when she accepted the position of Executive Director of the farthest North Girl Scout Council in Fairbanks, Alaska. While she went there on a 2 year contract she kept the position for 20 years! Jan particularly enjoyed the people and it was rare for her to go anywhere in the community and not run into someone she knew. She also loved seeing the animals, many of which could be viewed from her home, and marveled at the extreme changes in the landscape from season to season.

Jan called Alaska home for 31 years but returned to the Akron area to be closer to her beloved family. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease 5 years later and was especially grateful for the decision to return. The support given by various family members was instrumental in allowing her to remain in her home in her final years. Also, Jan was most appreciative and grateful for the loving and professional care she received from the staff of Brookdale at Home.

Jan was preceded by her parents John and Mary Ella Jenitis. She is survived by her loving partner of 32 years, Peggy O’Neal; her sisters Judy (Harold) McKinney and Joyce (Steve) Strasser; nieces and nephews Scott (Julie) McKinney, Annette (Angie) McKinney, Pat (Andrea) McKinney, Lauren Strasser and Owen Strasser; several great nieces and nephews.

Private family services have taken place. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests remembrances be given to the Alzheimer’s Association.
