Jean D. Smith, 88, passed away at home on May 20, 2014. Her humor, gentle demeanor and loving smile will be missed.
Jean loved her role as mother and homemaker. She was a keen observer who sought to know as much as she could about people and their experiences. She enjoyed helping others and was proud of her efforts starting the former Bath Library and volunteering for Meals on Wheels and the New & Nearly New Shop. She savored her experiences exploring the world, being with family and friends, and sharing tennis, golf, skiing, and other activities with them.
Raised in Shaker Heights, Jean attended Northwestern University, where she studied psychology, a skill that became valuable in raising her family. She treasured her many devoted friends from Bath, Medina, Bluffton, SC and elsewhere, and she stayed in touch with her long-term friends from Shaker Heights High and Tri-Delta sisters at Northwestern. From her honeymoon bicycle trip through Ontario and Quebec, to her later travels through Asia, Europe and the Americas, Jean took each encounter as a treasured learning experience.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Philip, and her son Drew. She is survived by daughter, Deborah (Denny) Vansickle; son, Dean (Carrie) Smith; and by her grandchildren, Gitanah (Scott) Noble, Neil Sorensen, Kaia and Casey Smith; and great grandson, Asher Noble.
Special thanks to her loving caregivers Flo, Carol and Haley and to all of her special friends and helpers at Chambrel.
A remembrance service will be held in the community room of Chambrel in Montrose on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at 1:00 pm. (Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel)
