Joan H. Smith, 85, died September 27, 2012.

She was born in Akron and had been a lifetime resident of the area. Mrs. Smith was a graduate of The University of Akron with both a Bachelor and Master of Science degree and was a graduate of the Idabelle Firestone School of Nursing. She was a member of the Cadet Nurse Corps and Guardian Angels Catholic Church. She was a charter member of the Association of Women's Health and Obstetric & Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) and retired from Akron General Medical Center.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by husband, William, and is survived by daughters, Sue Ann Knapp of Sarasota Fla., Priscilla Gordon of Richmond, Calif.; son, Timothy (Loretta) Smith of Ft. Myers, Fla.; grandchildren, Alex Knapp, Courtney Horning, Christopher and Timothy Smith; great-grandchildren, River and Balin Horning, Kaelyn and Christian Smith; and sister, Barbara T. (Robert) Knapp of Wichita, Kan.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, September 29th at Guardian Angels Catholic Church, 1676 S. Cleveland-Massillon Road, Copley 44321, where friends will be received beginning at 10 a.m. Inurnment at Holy Cross Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Akron General Development Foundation/Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service, 400 Wabash Ave. Akron, 44307.
