Joan Adele Siplow Nelson

June 6, 1941 — August 12, 2022

Joan Adele Siplow Nelson , born June 6, 1941 passed away on August 12, 2022. Joan grew up in Akron, Ohio and was the youngest of three sisters, her older sisters were Eileen Siplow and Evelyn Siplow Tuchman. Her parents were Bessie and William Siplow.

After graduating from Buchtel High School, she attended The Ohio State University before transferring the University of Akron where she graduated with a bachelor’s in education. She taught for Akron City Schools at Rankin Elementary School, until her children were born, at which time she focused a lot of her attention on Jennifer Nelson (Barrett) and David Nelson. She was an active member in Temple Israel and taught kindergarten for their Sunday School for over 15 years. During her free time, she enjoyed sailing with her family at Atwood Lake. Joan and her husband James enjoyed travelling together and participated in many cruises, seeing Alaska, the Caribbean among many other lovely places. Later in life she experienced joy with her water aerobics at the JCC, reading books, playing mahjong keeping her loved ones fed. She loved being “Baba” to her grandson and picking out books to read together with him. Her chocolate chip cookie recipe delighted him, and everyone fortunate enough to try the recipe. She and her husband Jim enjoyed many days on their back deck enjoying the peaceful space and feeding the birds in their backyard. She always liked to make sure no one left a party on an empty stomach. She taught us all how to be more loving, more selfless, more kind.

Joan is survived by her husband, James N. Nelson; her daughter, Jennifer Barrett, son-in-law, Steven Barrett and their son, Jackson James Barrett; her son, David Nelson, and daughter in law, Margo White. She is also survived by her Niece, Jan Tuchman, her husband, Joseph Rosta and their daughter, Celia Tuchman Rosta.
