Jody Leigh McLain , 56, of Akron affectionately known as “Big Dog”, Nana, Sissy, and Joad, passed away on March 5, 2024. Both a giver and a fixer, Jody attacked her pancreatic cancer for over two years with grace, strength, and determination, even through the final moments. Jody was born in Kansas City, MO on October 11, 1967 to the late H.D. (Tom) McLain and Linda McLain. A life-long, proud resident of Akron, she graduated from Central Hower High School class of 1986, and received her Bachelors and Masters Degree of Social Work from the University of Akron. Jody’s heart for service was demonstrated throughout her 30 year long career as a licensed Social Worker for Summit County Children’s Services. She also worked for Bob Evans for 20 years to support her young son as a single parent. She was a committed member of CWA Local #4546 and was an active and much loved member of Garden City Church. Jody enjoyed the simple things in life, cooking for her family, spoiling her grandchildren, gardening, and watching Cleveland sports. Soft-hearted, yet stubborn, Jody could find beauty in everything and everyone. She loved every festival, every concert, and all things Christmas. She was a huge nature and animal lover, who had hoped she would retire working in a floral shop or garden center.
Preceded in death by her parents, beloved aunt and uncle James H. and Eva Miller and faithful companion Bud Dog. She is survived by the greatest joys of her life, her loving son Sebastian Hopson and her 4 grandchildren Marquez (16), Skylar (11), Summer (8), and Savannah (2). Beloved siblings Kara (Carl) Finley and Scott McLain; dear nieces Laina and Celia Wilson. Best friend and sister Natalie Trachsel and family friend Pat Rowell. Special cousins Sandy (Michael) Beetner and Rev. Dr. David (Kathy) Miller. Jody’s family would like to thank the entire devoted and loving staff on the 5400 Wing and ICU of Akron General/Cleveland Clinic Medical Center for the skillful, loving care provided in the last weeks of her life.
