John N. Economou passed away peacefully early February 25, 2011 hand in hand with Elena, Johnna, John and Marilyn listening to Sinatra's New York New York.
Preceded in death by his loving parents, Mary and Nicholas; his loving wife, Mary Arfaras; and beloved father-in-law, John S. Arfaras; he is survived by daughters, Elena M. Economou Zwisler and Johnna M. Economou; devoted son-in-law, John W. Zwisler; long time friend, Marilyn M. Buckey; mother-in-law, Helen Arfaras; brother-in-law, Sam Joan Arfaras; and sisters-in-law, Ann Arfaras and Sally Economou.
John and his brother Jeffrey grew up spending every summer with their Aunt Lilly and Uncle Dennis in Southampton. They enjoyed endless hours riding the waves and fishing. They loved attending Yankee games with their Uncle Dennis and going to Coney Island with their Aunt Lilly.
John attended Portage Path Grade School, Buchtel High School and the University of Akron where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta. John was a basketball star at Buchtel and the University of Akron where he was affectionately known as ``Buckets'. John continued his basketball career while serving in the U.S. Army.
He met his beautiful wife, Mary Arfaras through the church choir. They were married for over 40 years. John and Mary were a great support to each other and enjoyed music, Southampton, and family.
John was President of the Pearl Coffee Company which was founded by his father Nicholas and the three brothers in 1919. John lived his life learning the art of roasting and was very proud of their famous Diana coffee. He enjoyed working with his daughter Johnna to continue the family traditions. Father and daughter enjoyed many years of great fun teasing the customers and taunting them with their New York Yankee loyalty. John was a tremendous influence on his daughter Elena's life. He taught her the art of debate and they had many great adventures together.
John was philanthropic in nature. His works not only touched the lives of those in Akron but across the United States and Greece.
John's life long dream came true when he was unanimously elected National President of the Order of AHEPA, the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association. John's connection with the Greek culture was very important to him. John was very proud to be President of the Akron Rotary Club as he believed in giving back to the community. John was very proud of becoming an Archon in the Greek Orthodox Church. John will be dearly missed by his family and many friends.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 129 S. Union St., Akron 44304, with Rev. Fr. Jerry F. Hall officiating. Interment at Rose Hill Burial Park with military honors by Firestone VFW Post #3383. Friends may call at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., 5 to 8 p.m. Monday with a Trisagion service to be held at 6:30 p.m. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, Order of AHEPA Chapter 63, Akron Rotary Foundation, or the John N. Economou Scholarship Fund.
