John Hanchulak, 65, passed away September 22, 2013, after a two-year confrontation with
cancer.
John is survived by Ann, his wife of 28 years; daughter, Dorothy (Dome) Cameron; son, John Alexander of Reston, VA.; granddaughters, Ashley and Alahna; sister, Elaine (Bob) Walters; and nephew, John.
John was born in Warren, Ohio on July 12, 1948 to Agnes (Kazimer) and John Hanchulak and
was baptized into the Catholic Faith at St. Mary Catholic church. He attended St. Mary grade
school and John F. Kennedy High School, graduating in 1966. He attended Carnegie Mellon
University, graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Design.
He taught one year in the Warren Public School system, then joined the ad agency Sherman and
Associates, as a graphic designer. While in Warren, he was especially involved with the
Trumbull Art Guild, helping the gallery grow with monthly events and shows promoting local
artists.
John then moved to Akron to join Hesselbart & Mitten/Arocom Inc., becoming Executive Art
Director after a five-year stay. In 1978, John formed Smiley/Hanchulak Design, Inc. with partner
Doug Smiley, and built the firm into a regional sales promotion, public relations, and advertising
firm with national and international clients such as American Greetings, Genie, TDK Electronics
Corporation, General Electric, Parker Hannifin, Evenflo, and large regional firms such as Smith
Dairy in Orrville.
John was a parishioner of St. Hilary Roman Catholic Church and was a resident of Fairlawn
Heights since 1990.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Hilary Church, 2750 W. Market St. There will be no calling hours. John will be interred at St. Michael's Cemetery in Newton Falls, Ohio next to his parents and grandparents. In lieu of flowers or other monetary remembrances, friends are requested to make donations in John's name to Our Lady of Victory Shrine Maintenance Fund at Archbishop Hoban High School.
