John F Harvey

John F. Harvey, 97, died November 14, 2010.

He was born in Washington D.C. on May 20, 1913 and spent his working career in the Akron, Ohio area.

He received the degree of Civil Engineer in 1935 and the degree of Master of Civil Engineering in 1938 both from Cornell University. He was associated with the Babcock and Wilcox Company in engineering, managerial and consulting capacities; and as adjunct professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Akron where he conducted courses in pressure vessel design.

He joined Babcock and Wilcox Company in 1935 and subsequently became head of the Marine and Special Products Department. His work was in the structural and mechanical design responsibility for naval steam power plants, pressure components for the earliest nuclear plants at Consolidated Edison and the nuclear ship NCC Savannah, and high pressure vessels for NASA and the chemical and petroleum industries.

Mr. Harvey wrote numerous technical papers and textbooks, and held several patents for pressure vessel construction. He was a past chairman of the Pressure Vessel Research Committee and had been a member of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Committee and other code-making bodies.

A Fellow Member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, he was the 1979 recipient of the J. Hall Taylor Medal for outstanding contributions in the design and construction of nuclear power equipment; and the 1985 ASME Pressure Vessel and Piping Award for his outstanding research, development, teaching and advancement in the state of the art.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth M. Harvey of Akron; daughter, Elizabeth Ann Craven of Moraga, Calif.; grandson, J. Chad Craven of Denver, Colo.; great-grandchildren, Grace and Carter Craven; niece, Margaret Cope Morgan Dave; nephews, Sandy Cope Debbie, Michael Cope Debbie and Tom Cope Debbie.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Hilary Catholic Church. Interment at Rose Hill Burial Park. There are no calling hours. The family suggests memorials to St. Hilary Catholic Church, 2750 W. Market St., Akron 44333 or the Alzheimer's Association , 1815 W. Market St., #301, Akron 44313.
