John Roger Hastings, 72, died August 13, 2008.
Born in Ravenna, Roger spent his career working for a variety of contractors beginning with the Ohio Turnpike in 1951 all the way through his retirement from Shelly and Sands. He joined the Operating Engineers Union 18, District 6 and rose through the ranks. He served on the Advisory Board of the Union and as Chairman of the Retirees Committee for Labor Union 18, District 6. Roger also served as a board member of the Tri-County Labor Council and provided his unique outlook and expertise as a Copley Township Trustee for 8 years.
Preceded in death by his parents, John and Alyce Hastings; brother, Harry and sons, Jeff and Derek; he is survived by his wife of 34 years, Jean; daughter, Debbie; sons, John, Jim, Scott, Howard and Darrell; brother, Bruce; sisters, Alyce and Judy; many loved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. SUNDAY at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., with Dr. Donard M. Engle officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service, 3358 Ridgewood Rd., Akron 44333. Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel
