John Nicolacakis, 75, died peacefully, February 17, 2010.
"Actions speak louder than words" is a fitting way to remember the life of this kind and humble man. John dutifully always did "the right thing" whether in business, or matters of the heart. And John's heart was big--he knew how to celebrate life. Entertaining family and friends often, John loved blaring Cretan lyra music and convincing anyone who would listen that his wife makes the, "Best" or that his 1974 Saab has, "A wishbone suspension that" If he wasn't holding a history book, John had a video camera in hand recording anything from a mundane dinner conversation to a wedding.
Born in Chania, Crete, Greece he emigrated to the United States in 1954 and served in the U.S. Army from 1955-1958. He lived in Cuyahoga Falls for over 40 years before retiring to Oldsmar, Florida seven years ago. A graduate of McKim Technical Institute, many will remember that John, along with his brother Victor, owned and operated "Day and Night TV" in Cuyahoga Falls for over forty years. During that time he was very active in the Northampton Rotary Club Past President and Paul Harris Fellow, Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, The Cretan Association of Akron, and The Akron Executives Association. In Florida, John was a member of The Cretan Association of Clearwater.
He shared his life with his beloved wife of forty-seven years, Justine; sons, Nick Maria Sherman Oaks, Calif. and Jason Patty Kent, Ohio; sister, Gloria Apostolopoulos Adoni preceded in death, Chania, Crete; brothers, Victor, preceded in death, Antonia Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Manoli Popi and George Smaragdi Chania, Crete; as well as his five grandchildren. He was also like a second father and grandfather to niece, Katina Jim Myers; and nephew, Dean Maria as well as their children. We will deeply miss his sense of humor, stories from the old country and unique charm.
