John Walter Solomon left us on August 28, 2017 after fighting an especially aggressive form of prostate cancer.
John was born in Queens, New York, in 1944 the son of John A. and Florence Solomon. After graduating as valedictorian of Half Hollow Hills High School in Huntington, New York, he received a degree in government from Cornell University. John then attended the University of Michigan Law School before accepting an offer to join the Foreign Service of the Department of State. His first overseas assignment was in Quito, Ecuador where he met Agneta, the love of his life. They married in 1969. In 1971 he returned to law school in Ann Arbor.
After graduation, he joined Brouse & McDowell where he worked for thirty years. He left that firm in 2004 as part of a group that opened the Akron office of Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease. John retired in 2012 but remained active in various pro bono activities.
John is survived by Agneta and their two daughters, Ingrid (Jason) Effman of West Sand Lake, New York and Alexandra (JD) Siegel of Brooklyn, New York; sister, Linda (Nat) Kennedy of Simsbury, Connecticut; and grandchildren, Zachary, Jared and Gregory Effman and Echo Siegel. His family always was the focus of John's life and in recent years he enjoyed taking them on trips overseas.
John had an intense interest in South America and traveled there frequently with Agneta. He enjoyed taking friends there, especially Ecuador and Argentina, to introduce them to the continent that he enjoyed so much. John also enjoyed Agneta's summer cottage in Sweden, football Saturdays in Ann Arbor, wine, bridge, Spanish chronicles, the Cleveland Museum of Art and working in the yard.
Carrying on a Solomon family tradition, John supported the education of family members and others. He established the John and Agneta Solomon Scholarship Fund at the University of Michigan Law School, and supported the high school education of many indigenous students in the Ecuadorean Highlands.
