Jon Ledman Weingart, MD, 80, died Friday, December 11, 2015 at Akron City Hospital from complications of lymphoma.
Jon was born to Lee and Frances Weingart on June 18, 1935. After graduating from Buchtel High School, he attended Ohio Wesleyan University, graduating in 1957 Phi Beta Kappa. While there, he met Jane Hlavin and began a life long partnership of love. They were married in 1958.
Jon attended medical school at Western Reserve University and accepted a year -long internship at Hartford Hospital in Connecticut. He continued his training at the Mayo Clinic in internal medicine and neurology. During his residency training, he served in the United States Army at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. After completing his neurology residency, he spent two years in Florida before returning to Akron in private practice.
Jon was a prominent member of the Akron medical community beginning in 1971. He was the first Neurologist and Division Chairman in the Summa system. He was President of the Neurological and Neuroscience Association, Chief of Staff of Akron City Hospital, medical advisor to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, and awarded the Teacher of the Year by the Akron City Hospital house staff. He was instrumental in bringing the first CT scanner and MRI scanner to Akron. He loved working with physicians in training and served as an inspirational teacher and mentor to hundreds of house officers and medical students.
Jon was an active member of the community and loved living in Ohio. He was actively involved in The Bath Church and supported his alma maters of Buchtel High School and Ohio Wesleyan, as well as the Mayo Clinic. He was an avid supporter of Akron U. and Kent State sports, as well as the local arts in both Akron and Cleveland. He has been a lifetime Browns, Indians, Cavaliers, and Buckeyes fan.
Jon enjoyed golf, gardening, history, and politics and was a lifelong student. He was a member of Fairlawn Country Club, The Doctors Mayo Society and the Presidents Circle of Ohio Wesleyan.
His greatest love was his family that had grown out of his beautiful marriage with Jane. His retirement years were filled with trips to see his grandchildren and sharing in their lives, whether that was sports, music, or dance. The annual family vacation at the Outer Banks, North Carolina was the high point of the year for Jon.
Jon is survived by his wife, Jane and his children, Jon, Linda, Laurie and Amy; daughter-in law, Carol; sons-in-law, Marty and Mark; grandchildren, Jon, Emily, Melanie, Molly, Robby, Maggie, Rachael, Jeff, Alex, Nathan and Aaron; and brothers, Ned and David Weingart.
The family is grateful to and thankful for his physicians, nurses, hospital and support staff, and all his healthcare workers for their caring medical support over the years he dealt with his cancer.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at The Bath Church, 3980 W. Bath Rd., with Rev. Mark W. Frey officiating. Private interment at Moore's Chapel Cemetery. Friends may call 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., Akron 44333.
