Joseph A. Usnik, Jr., 83, of Fairlawn, passed away January 27, 2012 at Ridgewood Healthcare Center after a lengthy illness surrounded by his family.
Joe was born on March 8, 1928 in Barberton. He graduated from Barberton High School in January, 1946 and proudly served in the United States Navy on the U. S. S. Shenandoah from 1946 to 1948. He owned/operated the Square Deal store in Barberton and was later employed by Akron Packing as a truck driver and meat cutter and as a custodian with the Summit County Physical Plants Department.
Joe was a member of the former Sacred Heart and St. Cyril & Methodius Churches in Barberton and currently was a member of St. Martin's Lodge and Guardian Angels Church in Copley.
Preceded in death by his parents, Joseph, Sr. and Mary (Podlipec); brother, William; sisters, Mary Obreza, Josephine Strebic and Florence Usnik; Joe is survived by his wife of 55 years, Olga (Gugleta); daughter and son-in-law, Jolene and Bill Roth of Fairlawn; sister, Jane Skraba of Tavares, Florida; sister-in- law, Helen McDermott of Wichita, Kansas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr. Paul Coleman and staff as well as the entire staff at Ridgewood Healthcare Center for their kindness, care, love and compassion during Joe's illness.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced. Donations in Joe's name may be made to the Alzheimer's Association , 1815 West Market Street, Akron, Ohio 44313.
