Josephine E. Brown Fishburn

March 13, 1922 — December 16, 2011

Josephine E. Brown Fishburn, 89, passed away on December 16, 2011, while in Assisted Living at Sumner on Ridgewood in Copley, Ohio.

Jo was born in 1922 and raised in Akron, Ohio. She graduated from East High School and Actual Business College and worked for ten years at Evans Savings and Loan. Jo married James Fishburn in 1949. As part of General Tire Company International, they were posted overseas in Manila and San Juan, as well as residing in Scarsdale, N.Y., for ten years before returning to the Akron area. Jo was a 38-year resident of Silver Lake, where she was a member of the Village garden club and the Church in Silver Lake. Until her retirement in 1980, she was employed at the University of Akron, office of the Dean of Education, for twenty years. Jo was an avid, locally recognized, quilter and gardener. She was associated with the St. Joseph Quilting Group and produced numerous quilts for friends and family. In 1994, Josephine reluctantly gave up her home and garden and became a resident at Independent Living at Sumner on Ridgewood. She thoroughly enjoyed the new friendships of Sumner residents and staff alike.

The family would like to thank her physician, Dr. Daniel Steidl, the Sumner staff, and the Great Lakes Caring Hospice Co. for their compassionate care.

Jo is survived by her daughter, Joan Elizabeth Lambert; and brother, Robert Brown. She is also survived by nieces, Darlene Woodill Spencer, Kathy Jackson Tom, Christine Jagos Rod and Jinny Wagers as well as nephews, Jack Brown Yoshi, Bob Brown Shirley and Jim Brown. Numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews will miss their Aunt Jo as well. She was blessed with many friends, but in particular, Patty Prough, Kathy Moretz, Mary Robinson and Tony Meconi, whom she considered as family. She was preceded in death by her husband, James; parents, John and Rose Brown; three brothers, John, Russell, Thomas; and sister, Rose Sloan.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at the Billow FALLS Chapel, 1907 23rd. St., Cuyahoga Falls on Wednesday, December 21 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Diane Shirey officiating. Visitation with the family will begin at 10 a.m. A brief graveside service will take place at Chestnut Hill Memorial Park, 2613 Sackett Ave., Cuyahoga Falls, following the memorial service. Memorials may be made to The Church in Silver Lake, 2951 Kent Road, Silver Lake, OH 44224; or the Endowment Fund at Sumner on Ridgewood, 970 Sumner Parkway, Copley, Ohio 44321.
