Josephine (Jo) M. Stafinski, 92, a celebrated Akron bowler, died Friday, January 18, 2013.
Born in Akron on October 23, 1920, Jo graduated from Central High School and retired from Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. Jo was a champion on the women's bowling circuit in the early 1950's with the renowned ABC Cleaners team and the Beacon Journal Ladies All-Star teams. She rolled a 279 game and a 665 series, her personal bests. A 1960 title win at the Central States Doubles Championship gained her entry, with team partner Louise Molenaur, into the Summit County Sports Hall of Fame.
Jo was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Michael S. Stafinski; parents, Mary Mungo and Michael A. Capobianco; and brothers, Carmen (Armie) Capobianco, Dr. Nicholas C. Bianco, Frank Cappi, Dr. Michael C. Bianco, and Albert Bianco. She is survived by step-brother, Dr. Victor Mungo; brother-in-law, John (Sophie) Stafinski; sisters-in-law, Helen Capobianco and Angelina Capobianco; and many nieces and nephews.
A committal service in the Good Shepherd Mausoleum Chapel at Holy Cross Cemetery will take place at 1 p.m. SATURDAY, with Rev. Fr. Edward Burba officiating. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Summa Health System Foundation, 525 E. Market St., Akron, Ohio 44309.
