Karen Kleinfeld passed away December 3, 2010, following a brief illness.
Born in 1940 in Warren, Ohio, she was the daughter of James Knabb Brickley and Helen Myers Brickley. Following graduation from Leavittsburg High School she enrolled in the Medical Technology Program at Kent State University and then completed a two year internship at Case Western Reserve. This led to employment at University Hospitals of Cleveland, John Hopkins University, Greater Baltimore Medical Center and Microbiological Associates of Bethesda, Md. Her career in medical technology brought her back to Ohio to Akron Children's Hospital where she helped establish a virology laboratory. She was instrumental in the development of the tissue growth program and taught the technique around the country. Because of this new program, the lives of numerous burn victims were saved.
Karen was active in the First Ohio Chapter of Clinical Laboratory Management Association CLMA and served as chapter president. She coordinated the pathology curriculum at NEOUCOM. She retired from Children's Hospital as laboratory administrative director in 2002. She loved to travel, watch football in front of her fireplace, and be with her loving friends.
She lit up like a Christmas tree when talking about her extended family. She leaves her sister, Barbara Behling James of Hudson; niece, Karen Johnson Scott of Twinsburg; nephews, Tom Behling of Florida, Maj. David Behling Shannon of Virginia and Chris Behling Penny of Tennessee. Also surviving are nine great nieces and nephews.
Thank you to the staff of the Justin T. Rogers Care Center in Fairlawn for their loving assistance.
Services will be held 11 a.m. TUESDAY, December 7th at Montrose Zion United Methodist, 565 N. Cleveland-Massillon Rd., with Rev. Michael Teston officiating. Interment at Moore's Chapel Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Akron Children's Hospital, One Perkins Square, Akron, OH 44308.
