Kathleen “Kay” DeBolt (nee Yocum)
, of Akron, died peacefully on Sunday, October 9, 2022, surrounded by family. She was 75.
She is survived by her daughters, Sarah (Samer) Badawi and Becky DeBolt (Christopher Muraski), as well as family and friends in Akron, across the country, and around the world.
Kay grew up in Barberton and graduated from Barberton High School in 1965. She attended Kent State University before joining one of the first groups of VISTA volunteers, as part of which she served on the Duck Valley Indian Reservation of the Shoshone-Paiute tribes in Nevada. Kay later married Reuben DeBolt, who worked for Firestone Tire & Rubber Company, and they embarked on a life abroad that took them and their daughters to South Africa, Ghana, Thailand, and Italy. Animated, inquisitive, infinitely resourceful, and with an unforgettable sense of humor, Kay cultivated friendships, engaged in extensive volunteer work, learned new languages, worked as an extra in major motion pictures, and traveled even more extensively during those decades overseas. Upon returning to the United States, Kay began a career as a travel agent and subsequently founded her own business, The Corporate Gopher. Kay’s last and favorite job was as a water fitness instructor at The Natatorium in Cuyahoga Falls, where she worked until 2011.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret (King) Yocum, Paul Yocum, and Helen (Sweetser) Yocum, as well as her brother, John Yocum.
Her daughters extend special gratitude to the staff of the Village of St. Edward in Fairlawn for their extraordinary care and kindness for Kay.
