Laura Mae Berry (nee Ellenbrook, Kerran)

Laura Berry, 88, passed away on December 24, 2024. The only child of Adam and Bessie (Murphy) Ellenbrook, Laura was born September 10, 1936, at her home “in the shadow of Goodyear” as she always said. Her father was killed in the Doodlebug disaster July 1940. She was adopted by her stepfather, Otto Kerran (Kirinica) in 1946. She met the love of her life, Bill, at Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and they married in 1955. They had one child, Lisa Diane, in 1959. Laura returned to Akron in 1961 following a prolonged illness.

Throughout her life, Laura did everything fiercely and with devotion – musician, union member, debater, reader, gardener, cook. In addition to being a single mom, she served on countless committees at church and in the community. She was a staunch defender of her union. She passionately advocated for women’s rights, and for those who were less fortunate. She befriended those who were lonely. She gave of herself without reserve to any cause in which she believed. She was a unique person.

Above all, she cherished her family and her church.

She was preceded in death by her parents and stepfather. She is survived by daughter, Lisa (Dennis) McLaughlin and grandson, Adam.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Southern Care Hospice and to the entire staff of Canton Regency Assisted Living, particularly Tammy Hicks. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Choir Fund or Flower Guild.

Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m. FRIDAY, January 10, 2025 in the Chapel at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1361 West Market Street, Akron, Ohio 44313, with a reception following the service. Private Inurnment at Lakewood Cemetery.
