Leo A. Merzweiler
NAPLES, Fla. -- Leo A. Merzweiler, beloved husband, father and grandfather, died March 14, 2009.
He was born in Akron, Ohio on June 20, 1923. Most recently he was a resident of Naples, Fla., and a summer resident of Hartville, Ohio. Prior to this, he was a resident of Bath, Ohio for over 20 years.
Following service in World War II, he attended Miami University of Ohio, graduating in 1949. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, and for many years he remained active in alumni activities for both organizations.
Leo's business career was in the plastic industry. He founded Summit Plastic Company in 1954 and co-founded Landmark Plastic Corporation with his son, Robert, in 1984. He took pride in the jobs created and the innovative products developed through both of these Akron companies.
Leo loved the company of his family and friends, golfing, boating, fishing, and traveling. He was a member of Congress Lake Country Club in Hartville, Ohio, where he served as president, Belleair Country Club in Clearwater, Fla., and the Country Club of Naples. On retirement to Clearwater, Fla., where he lived part-time for 15 years, he volunteered his services to the Religious Community Services and the Morton Plant Hospital Foundation where he served as board chair.
Leo is survived by his wife, Jo'an; son, Robert and daughter-in-law, Vicki; granddaughter, Lauren Jesse Frank; grandson, Steven; step-daughter, Toni Jones; brother, Thomas; sister-in-law, Anne; and numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 40 years, Ruth; brother, Richard; and sisters, Ruth Godshalk and Mary Daugherty. He was deeply loved by his family and many, and he will be greatly missed.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:30 a.m. Friday at St. Hilary Catholic Church, 2750 W. Market St., with Fr. Steven Brunovsky officiating. Friends may call at the church one hour before services. Private interment at Rose Hill Burial Park. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to a favorite charity.
