Lewis H. Walker, M.D. died Thursday June 13, 2013.
He was born December 20, 1921 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Lew was a graduate of Washington High School, Butler University and the Indiana University School of Medicine class of 1944. He served with the United States occupation forces in Japan from 1946 to 1948 after World War II as a Captain in the Army. He completed his residency in Pediatrics at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland and worked at the Akron Clinic Foundation as a Pediatrician. In 1962, Lew was a co-founder of Children's Medical Group the first group medical practice in Akron dedicated to Pediatrics. He developed an interest in pediatric allergy, asthma and immunology. After spending many years studying Wednesdays in Pittsburgh, Lew completed a resident Fellowship in Pediatric Allergy and Immunology at Thomas Jefferson Medical University in Philadelphia in 1971 to become a board certified Pediatric Allergist. He founded Allergy and Pediatric Pulmonary Associates in 1993 where he practiced until his retirement in 2002.
Lew's hospital affiliations included: Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron Chairman (Emeritus) Department of Pediatric Medicine 1968 to 1980, Senior Attending Physician, Director (Emeritus) Allergy Clinic, Director (Emeritus) and founder Lewis H. Walker Cystic Fibrosis Center; North Eastern Ohio Medical University Associate Professor of Medicine (Emeritus); Good Samaritan Hospital Ashland, Ohio Consulting Physician in Pediatric Allergy Clinic; Aultman Hospital Canton, Ohio Courtesy Staff. He was board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, the American Board of Pediatrics Sub Board of Pediatric Allergy and the American Board of Allergy and Immunology.
Lew's professional memberships were Fellow, American College of Allergists, Fellow, American Academy of Allergy, Member American Association of Certified Allergists, Member American Thoracic Society, Member American Medical Association and Member Summit County Medical Society.
His garden was his escape from the pressures of the world, where he always had a water feature. Lew was also an avid fisherman, though the fishing was just as important as the catching.
Lew was preceded in death by his parents, James and Reva Walker; brothers, Jim and Leon; and daughter, Katherine. He is survived by his wife of more than 68 years, Charlotte; and siblings, Bill, Leona and John. Survivors also include his son, Christopher Walker (wife, Shelley and daughters, Alexandra and Erica), daughter, Gretchen Flynn (husband, Thomas and children, Molly and Peter), son, Curtis (wife, Laura and son, Mitchell), and son, Andrew. Also surviving are his Indian family, Rajeev and Neeta Kishore (children, Sonal and Sameer), Rakesh and Rupal Mehra (children, Arjun and Krish) and Manish and Rebecca Kapur (children, Nemi and Neha).
The family would like to thank the staff at the Ledges of Rockynol for their outstanding care, Senior Independence Hospice and especially Dad's devoted aide, Annette who did more than anyone to ease his final years.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1250 W. Exchange St., with Rev. Derek Starr Redwine officiating. Private inurnment at Rose Hill Burial Park.
