Our beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother, Lois Sewell Pflueger peacefully passed away surrounded by her family on December 8th at 91 years young.
Lois was born on April 23, 1930, in Cleveland, Ohio to James Luther Sewell and Edna Ridge Sewell. Lois went to King Elementary school and graduated high school at Old Trail in Akron in 1948. Lois then went on to pursue a degree in biology at Randolph Macon College in Virginia, graduating in the spring of 1952. In June 1952, she married the love of her life, John Seiberling Pflueger Jr., spending a full and happy life married for 58 years, raising three children, John III, James, and Ruth. She was active, sharp, and strong, attending events as recently as this past November.
Lois was a fiercely dedicated mom to her children and family came first above all else, a value she instilled in those around her. The hole left by her absence will be impossible to fill, as is apparent by recent social media tributes from her family.
Among organizations and groups that Lois was a member of and stayed busy with over the years include:
Diggers and Weeders (past President), Akron Garden Club (past President), Junior League of Akron, Akron Women’s City Club, Akron City Hospital Board, Louise Sumner Women’s Board, and a member of Portage Country Club.
Lois loved to garden, read, work cross word puzzles, and had a natural love of sports, specifically baseball as her father, Luke, played for the Cleveland Indians. She loved following The Ohio State Buckeyes football team as well as the Cleveland Browns. Lois enjoyed her twice a month bridge group, First Friday of the Month dinner group, monthly Book Club, and attending plays at the Women’s City Club.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents, James Luther “Luke” Sewell and Edna Ridge Sewell; her husband, John S Pflueger Jr.; and her son, John S Pflueger III. Lois is survived by son, James Pflueger (Sheryl); daughter, Ruth Nischt (Walter); grandchildren, Robin Beavers (Jason), Meghan Welker (Jordan), Peter Nischt (Ellen), Katherine Pflueger, John Nischt (Stacy), Kara Jones (Simeon), and John Pflueger IV; great grandchildren, Eden Jones, Macy Rizzo, Julian Nischt, Stella and Veda Welker, Bodhi Beavers, Cora Jones and Ruby Nischt.
Private services will be held at the Billow Fairlawn Chapel on Friday December 17, 2021. Due to COVID-19, there are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Lois’ name to the Stan Hywet Hall Foundation and the Akron Garden Club “Edna R. Sewell fund”.
