February 17, 1921 to
November 11, 2011
A shining star was released into the heavens on Thursday, November, 11 with the departure of Louise Campbell Goodman.
Born in Fairfield, Alabama on February 17, 1921 to Harvey J. and Ella Louise Cheatham Campbell, she spent her early years in Alabama where she was an avid Girl Scout, community volunteer, and an 'A' student who graduated from Fairfield High School in 1939. During World War II she attended Birmingham-Southern College, Texas State College for Women, American University in Washington, D.C. at which time she was also employed by Cromwell-Collier Publishing. She received her B.A. in Journalism from the University of Texas, Austin in 1945 and was an active member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority.
After moving to Dallas in 1946 she worked for Neiman Marcus in public relations and on October 19, 1946 married her devoted husband of 65 years, Jason Jones Goodman. Together they shared a love of theatre, art, music, literature, dancing, cards, gardening, their beloved pets, foreign travel, and entertaining. After their move to Akron in 1950 Louise's newly found talent for the stage was fostered by a variety of roles at Weathervane Playhouse and other Akron community theatres.
When not managing the various family homes and raising her four sons, she found time to volunteer for many different civic and community organizations. She was a choir member at St. John's Episcopal Church in Cuyahoga Falls and a communicant at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Bath, and St. David's Episcopal Church in Austin, Texas. Her work as a volunteer at Weathervane Playhouse rekindled her passion for journalism and she soon became the Director of Public Relations at Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens. After their move to Austin in 1980 she was the Assistant to the Artistic Director of the Austin Symphony and also volunteered as a reader for books for the blind at the Texas School for the Blind. Up until recently she volunteered once a week at the Next-To-New Shop of St. David's Episcopal Church, her favorite charity.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Jason Jones Goodman; four sons, Mark, Peter, Ned and David; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Artis-Goodman, Delilah Goodman, Mead Nichol, Lindsay Goodman and Sean Goodman; and her great-granddaughter, Lola Goodman. Her parents and her brothers, James Harvey Campbell and Thomas Hutchison predeceased her in life.
Her smile was contagious, the twinkle in her eye charitable and wise, and her engaging spirit exuded the gentle passion and love that she had for everyone and everything.
A memorial service will be held for family and friends at the Chapel of St. Paul's Episcopal Church 1361 West Market St., Akron, Ohio this Saturday, November 19 at 1 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Next-To-New Shop, an Outreach Ministry of St. David's Episcopal Church 5435 Burnet Rd., Austin, TX 78756 or the charity of your choice .
