Margaret J. Marting, 93, passed away on March 7, 2025 following a brief illness.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Thomas Marting, to whom she was married for over fifty years. Margaret is survived by her four children, Scott (Barbara), Peggy, Chuck, and Richard (Kathy), and nine grandchildren, Spenser Marting (Anna), Andrew Marting, Joshua Marting, Laurel Marting, Sarah Messner, Mary Messner, Thomas Marting, William Marting, and Timothy Marting. Margaret is also survived by her brothers, Richard Saunders and Larry Saunders.
Margaret was born in Hamilton, Ohio to E. Lois Saunders and Chauncy Saunders. She grew up in Ironton, Ohio. It was on the playground in elementary school that Margaret met and eventually married her childhood friend, Thomas Marting. She was a graduate of Bethesda School of Nursing and Milligan College. Margaret was an accomplished nurse, who had a remarkable career that included working in the “iron lung” ward at Cincinnati General during the polio epidemic and serving as a surgical nurse. From there, she taught medical surgical nursing at Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati. After that, she established the nursing program for the Southeast Ohio Tuberculosis Hospital. Eventually, Margaret made her way to Chicago where she became the head of surgical nurse education at Michael Reese Medical Center. Later, she taught part time at Akron City School of Nursing before hanging up her cap to raise her family.
Margaret was a devoted wife and a loving mother who provided wise guidance to her children and grandchildren. Her friends will recall the many greeting cards that she sent and the pies that she baked for them. Pecan was her specialty.
Margaret was a member of The Chapel and was active in Gideons International Auxiliary. She was never without Bibles to distribute or an uplifting verse to share. Until her death, she hosted a weekly Bible study in her home. She was a faithful follower of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, with whom she shall spend her eternity. We celebrate her earthly life and rejoice in her eternal life.
Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord will be praised. Give her the reward of her labor, and let her works praise her at the city gates. Prov. 31:30-31 CSB
