Margaret A Schreiner

December 16, 1925 — July 31, 2008

Margaret A. Schreiner
Margaret A. Schreiner "Peggy" left us to be with her beloved husband, Charles on July 31st, 2008. Our world has lost a remarkable woman.
Peggy was born December 16th, 1925 in Akron to John and Buela Novatny. She graduated as valedictorian of Buchtel High School in 1943, where she was president of Glee and also known as "Scoop" Novatny for her work on the V-Talon school newspaper.
Peggy was an extremely talented woman in many ways. She began singing at the age of 5 in many local churches and after performing a recital for local philanthropist Henrietta Seiberling she received a scholarship to attend Westminster College in New Jersey where she graduated in 1947.
She subsequently pursued her singing and acting career in New York City, and performed with The Westminster Choir and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in Carnegie Hall and Madison Square Garden. She appeared in numerous Broadway shows, operas, resorts, and night clubs. Her stage name was Peggy Norman, and counted Rosemary Clooney, John Raitt, Ernie Kovacs, Tony Bennett and Harry Belafonte as close friends.
Upon her father's death she returned to Akron, and became executive vice-president of the John P. Novatny Electric Company, which her father founded in 1920.
She was also active in many local charities and served on the Board of Directors for the Visiting Nurse Service Board since 1980. In addition, she served on the Hospice of VNS Board of Directors since its inception in 1994, and was currently serving as Chairman. Peggy and her late husband, Charles, were instrumental in the funding and construction of the Visiting Nurse Hospice in Fairlawn where she passed into heaven.
Her style and grace were always apparent and she was named Akron's Best Dressed Woman multiple times in the 1960's.
She leaves sons, Robert, Craig, Denny, Jay and Butch; daughters Connie, Katie, Jeri and Ruthie; grandchildren Wendy, Chuck and Michael, and granddaughter Lilliana.
Her love of all living creatures and respect for people regardless of race, creed, or religion is what we will remember most.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., with Rev. Linda Gregson officiating. Interment at Rose Hill Burial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home 2-5 p.m. Sunday.
If desired donations may be made to Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service, 3358 Ridgewood Road, Akron, OH 44333. Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel
