Marilyn Dorothy Woodling (nee Patzwahl), loving wife, mother and grandmother, passed away at age 92 on Monday, November 4, 2019. Marilyn was born in 1927 in Lakewood, Ohio, to Theodor and Dorothy (nee Roeper) Patzwahl.
Following her graduation with honors from Lakewood High School in 1945, Marilyn worked at the National Advisory Council for Aeronautics (NACA) in Brook Park, Ohio, which later became NASA. She met Gerald Woodling on a blind date to a Case Institute of Technology dance in 1944 and they married in 1948. In 1950, she graduated summa cum laude from Kent State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Education. Upon her graduation, Marilyn embarked on a 33 year career teaching business subjects (bookkeeping, typing, shorthand, notehand & word processing) at Aurora High School 3 years and Revere Senior High School 30 years. In 2013, she received the Revere Alumni Association’s Distinguished Educator Award. After retirement, Marilyn and Gerald were instrumental in expanding the SeniorNet Organization in Medina County which is devoted to teaching computer skills to senior citizens. Whether she was teaching teenagers or senior citizens, Marilyn was a devoted educator who wanted only the best for her students. One of her greatest joys was meeting her former students and rejoicing in their success stories. Marilyn was a 60 year member of Bath Church UCC and a devoted volunteer at the church, the Salvation Army and the Bath Volunteers for Service. She also enjoyed dancing, hiking, ice skating and traveling.
Marilyn was preceded in death by Gerald, her husband of 69 years. She is survived by her brother, Robert Patzwahl; sons, Dale (Cindy) and Mark (Karen); grandchildren, Nathan Woodling (Graeme Jackson), Matthew Woodling, Michael Woodling, Kristen Reaver (Nathan) and Katelyn Woodling (Andy Kall).
A memorial service will be held at The Bath Church, United Church of Christ, 3980 West Bath Road, on Saturday, November 23, 2019 at 11:00 am. The family will receive friends before the service starting at 9:30 am. A light lunch will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Bath Church, United Church of Christ , 3980 West Bath Road, Akron, OH 44333 or the Hospice of Medina County, 5075 Windfall Road, Medina, OH 44256.
