Marjorie M. Laning, 93, died February 24, 2010.
A native of Wheeling, WV, she had resided in Akron since 1946. Marjorie obtained her B.A. from Vassar College and M.S. from the University of Louisville. She was an industrial
analytical chemist and homemaker.
Mrs. Laning's volunteer activities include: president of Ohio Council of Churches 1979 -82; First Presbyterian Church of Akron, Elder, chaired Worship Committee Synod of the Covenant, member Budget and Finance, Stewardship and Witness, Ecumenical Relations, Ethnic Church Affairs Committees and General Assembly; member Hunger Program Advisory Committee, Publication Policy Task Force; Presbyterian Women, National Executive Committee Member, former Ohio Synodical President, Woman's Association, First Church Akron, President.
In the community, she belonged to the League of Women Voters of Akron Area, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Newsletter Editor and Board Member; was a member of the Akron Area Coalition for Economic Conversation Task Force United Way of Summit County, Good Neighbors where she Chaired the Unit for Clothing and Food Relief. She was a Book Reviewer for the Akron College Club, Member of Bread of the World, 14th Congressional District and Campaign for U.N. Reform, Adult Bible Study Leader at First Presbyterian Church of Akron, and was a Summit County Election Official.
She was Citizen of the Year at PPG Research Center, Life Member of the Ohio Pastors Convocation and Senior Citizen Volunteer at Rockynol Retirement Community
Marjorie is survived by her husband of 64 years, Stephen H. Laning; children, Barbara Laning Fitzpatrick and Malcom H. Terri Laning; grandchildren, Jeremy and Tracie Laning and Stephen Fitzpatrick.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. MONDAY at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., with Dr. Mark T. Ruppert officiating. Inurnment in Santa Claus, Indiana. There are no calling hours.
