Midge Smith died peacefully at the age of 92 on October 23, 2013 after a life fully lived. She passed away after a brief illness at the Hospice on Ridgewood.
She was born in Akron, Ohio on November 12, 1920 to the late Hermine (Clause) and John William Hodgson. She was a proud graduate of Buchtel High School. Midge was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Duke University, also belonging to the honor societies Tau Kappa Alpha (debate) and Chi Delta Phi (creative writing) and the social sorority Sigma Kappa. Midge met her husband, Allan Clifford Smith, in college and they were married during World War II when Allan was a pilot in the Naval Air Corps. They were stationed in Florida and New York-where she experienced V-J Day on the streets of New York City. After the war, they returned to Akron to raise their family.
Midge spent countless hours in the service of others and greatly enjoyed the work and friendships she formed through volunteering on the Women's Board of Akron General Hospital, the Junior League of Akron, and the Women's Committee of Akron University. She was an avid reader and for many years of her life, read a book a day. In recent years, Midge was an active member of the Fortnightly Club. As a wife, mother, aunt, sister, grandma and friend, she was a blessing in the lives of all that knew her.
She was preceded in death by Allan C. Smith in 1999. She is survived by daughters Susan Smith of St. Louis and Marnie Smith of Boston; son and daughter-in-law William and Linda Smith of Mount Vernon, Ohio; grandchildren Courtney and Andrew Smith, Lindsay (Wes) Mackey, Martha, Emma and Abigail Simmons. Her nieces and nephews held a special place in her heart.
