Martha Jo Carey

Martha Jo Carey , 98, died in her sleep Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at Brookdale Camelot in Medina, Ohio.  A stroke in 2013 had left her mostly wheelchair-bound but still enjoying life.

Born Martha Jo Davis in Connersville, Indiana on November 18, 1925, she graduated from Western College for Women (now incorporated into Miami University) where she was a member of Sigma Kappa sorority.  After working for the Department of the Army in Washington during WWII, she later attended Indiana University and obtained an MA in Education.  She taught art classes in Connersville elementary and secondary schools for several years. After marrying Keith Jerome Carey in 1956, the family moved to Milwaukee in 1959 and then to Akron in 1965 when Keith was appointed General Agent for Northwestern Mutual Life.

Jo was an avid gardener, bridge player, reader, and lover of antiques. She was a member of Akron Women’s City Club for several decades and of Fairlawn Country Club for a shorter period. She almost achieved Lifetime Masters designation by the American Contract Bridge League. She was also a member of First United Methodist Church in Connersville, of Trinity English Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne, and of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Akron until around the time of her stroke. In her later years, Jo was a fan of the Cleveland Cavaliers.  She will be greatly missed for her kind and caring personality and her encouraging words.

Preceded in death by her husband, Keith Jerome Carey; parents, William N. Davis and Mary Irene Davis; and son, Craig Andrew Carey. She leaves behind sons, Mark Steven Carey (Michele Walters) of Arlington, Virginia, Scott Cameron Carey of Akron, Kendall Davis Carey (Alma) of Yardley, Pennsylvania; and grandchildren, Matthew Walters Carey and Julia Allison Carey of Arlington.

Private services will be held Monday, February 26th at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Rev. Dr. Gary M. Erdos officiating.
