Mary Kapper Barry passed away November 25th, 2011 at Summa Hospice and Palliative Care Center. Mary was a remarkable woman and mother, who will be missed and remembered by the many people whose lives she touched. Mary was born on June 11, 1925 to parents Genevieve and William Kapper in Brooklyn, N.Y.

She attended St. Joseph's College earning a degree in English Literature in 1947. She married John E. Barry and they had ten children, ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A deeply spiritual person, Mary was also very involved in many social causes. She worked tirelessly for many civil rights causes for women and minorities. She helped to establish Akron Women Against Rape in 1974 now the Rape Crisis Center of Medina and Summit Counties. She then earned a Master's Degree in Social Work from Case Western University in 1978. Afterwards, she worked as a dialysis social worker for the Greater Akron Dialysis Center. She then pursued a Master's Degree in Divinity from Starr King School for the Ministry in Berkley, Calif. in 1988. She was ordained as a Unitarian Universalist Minister in 1989, and served as a pastor in Minnesota. Following that, she returned to the Bay Area to serve as a hospice Chaplain for Pathways Hospice and Home Health in Oakland, Calif.

As the years passed Mary felt it was time to return to Akron to be near her family. Mary was preceded in death by her son, Mark Barry in 2001 and a daughter, Claire Simpson in July of 2011. She is survived by eight of her ten children, John Barry Rosemary, Tom Barry, James Barry, Mary Ann Seiberling, Matthew Barry fiancé, Chris, Daniel Barry, Jeannine Marks Steve, Maureen Rocha Rodrigo; grandchildren, Melissa, Sean, Christopher, Rachel, Sarah, Wyatt, Mackenna, Brady, Marcos, Emma; great-grandchildren, Kayla, Lauren, Cory, Aivary, Noelle, Calleigh, and Henry.

Mary Kapper's life was a shining example that one person can make a difference. The family would like to thank the wonderful team of the Summa Hospice and Palliative Care Center at Akron City Hospital who provided her with loving care.

A memorial service will be held 7 p.m. WEDNESDAY, at Fairlawn West United Church of Christ, 2095 W. Market St., Akron 44313, with Rev. David A. Loar and Fr. Norman Douglas officiating. Friends may call at the church from 4 to 7 p.m. prior to the service. There will be a private burial for the family. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to Summa Hospice and Palliative Care Center, Foundation Office, P.O. Box 2090 Akron, OH 44398-6153.
