Friday February 26th, 2010, Mary "Baba" Dimitroff passed away at the age of 94.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; and her son, Tom. She is survived by her son, Nick Pat; grandchildren, Cindy and Lynette, Tammy Bryan Komoff, Becky Charlie Pollis; great grandson, Joseph Raffale; and daughter-in-law, Kay.
Mary was born in 1916 in Bitola, Yugoslavia, what is today the Republic of Macedonia. She immigrated to the United States in the 1930's. She was one of the last of a generation who sought a better life in a foreign land. She arrived at Ellis Island not knowing a word of English. Baba made her way to Mansfield, OH, where she met her future husband John. On their second date he turned to her and said, "I like you, you like me, let's get married."
Mary and John owned and ran the Modern Café in Akron for 50 years. She was famous for her Sauerkraut Balls. Mary was also a founding member of St. Thomas Eastern Orthodox Church. She volunteered at the church every Friday for the fish fry and helped cater weddings. Mary helped manage her son's rental properties and then joined the family furniture business in the 1980's.
For those she has left behind, she was not just a mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend; she was the embodiment of our collective past, the matriarch of four generations of Macedonian descendants. She was the symbol of everything we had come from and everything we can achieve should we have the courage and conviction to try.
Services will be held 10 a.m., Tuesday, March 2nd at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., Akron with Rev. Father Jerry F. Hall officiating. Burial at Mt. Peace Cemetery. Friends may call 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to Hospice of Summa, P.O. Box 2090, Akron OH 44398.
