Mary Jane Hammond

Mary Jane Hammond, 95, died May 5, 2020 after a ten year battle with dementia.

Born November 20, 1924 on the family farm in College Grove, TN, she attended Middle Tennessee State University. She joined the WWII war effort as a secretary for the Tennessee Eastman Corporation in Oak Ridge. It was there that she met and married Charles H. Hammond. After the war, they moved to Akron, where he worked for the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company and they raised their family.

Mary Jane was a homemaker whose interests were her family, church, sewing, baking, gardening and traveling. She was a member of the DAR Akron Chapter, the AARP Firestone Park United Methodist Church Chapter, and the Greentown Prime Timers. She attended First United Methodist Church, Akron.

Preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, parents, and 3 siblings, she is survived by son, Dr. Charles H. Hammond, Jr. (Mary Jo); daughter, Janice M. Kobb (Charles); four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Marta J. Williger, Gardens of Western Reserve Home Care and Hospice, and the many caregivers who have provided loving care over the past 10 years.

A graveside service will be held at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Franklin, TN. Memorials in her name may be made to the American Red Cross , the Children’s Concert Society of Akron or a charity of one’s choice.Services in care of The Billow Funeral Homes & Crematory, 85 N. Miller Road, Akron, OH 44333
