Mary V. Widdicombe

After a lifetime of travel and exploration, Mary V. Widdicombe, 84, of Akron, Ohio began her final journey on July 14, 2017.

After graduating from Toronto High School in 1951, Mary took her first train ride to Washington, D. C. where she worked for the F.B.I, from 1951 - 1952. She then worked as a secretary for Goodyear from 1952 - 1960. Mary was married to Navy Lieutenant Commander and Goodyear Airship Operations Pilot Richard Widdicombe for 33 years and enjoyed an assignment based in Rome from 1980 - 1984. Mary shared her artistic talents with all who knew her - via her needlepoint and original jewelry designs, her delectable cooking and baking, and the warmth with which she entertained family and friends in her homes. An aficionado of history, Mary read historical novels voraciously. Her love of travel ultimately took her to 49 states (all but Wisconsin) and 29 countries on five continents including all manner of adventures: scaling Chichen Itza in Mexico, battling claustrophobia in Egypt's pyramids, cruising through the Panama Canal, climbing through grueling heat to Athens' Acropolis, bargaining at markets in Istanbul, and countless others which Mary enjoyed recounting. In later years, Mary delighted in playing Mahjong and Bridge with her friends at Concordia. Her humor, intellect, and sense of style graced the world with a rare and precious beauty.

Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Richard Widdicombe; parents, Helen and Earl Johns, and Barney and Mary Johnston; brother, John Johnston; and sister, Ruth Stover. Mary is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Christy and Britt Cherry and her grandson, Derick of Akron; sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Roc Crispino of Toronto, Ohio; brother-in-law, Doug Stover of Knoxville, Tennessee; and nieces, nephews and friends who will forever treasure her memory and her indomitable spirit.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will take place in the near future at Mary's longtime residence, Concordia at Sumner. (Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel)
