Maximilien Menassa M.D.

Beloved husband, father and grandfather, Max Menassa passed away on Jan. 14, 2010. He was 79.

Max practiced psychiatry in the Akron area for almost 40 years before retiring in 2006. Born in Alexandria, Egypt, Max emigrated first to Canada and then to the United States with his family and settled in Akron in 1969. In addition to being passionate about his career, he was a lover of languages and spoke French, Italian, Arabic and English fluently. At the age of 71, he took refresher courses in Spanish and at the age of 72, he took refresher courses in German. He was still studying Greek, German and Hebrew at the age of 76.

He became a doctor of internal medicine in 1957, the same year he married his wife, Maria. After practicing in Alexandria, Egypt, newly married, he and Maria a nurse traveled to the African bush in Sudan where he practiced for three years. There he performed surgeries, obstetrics, orthopedics and oral surgery, in addition to treating tropical diseases. He delivered a few hundred babies, including his own.

In 1963, Max became a doctor of tropical medicine and surgery before becoming a board-certified psychiatrist and neurologist in 1971. In Canada, he studied psychiatry at the University of Montreal in French for two years, then at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, also for two years. In his private practice in Akron, he specialized in the outpatient treatment of mental illness.

At his request, Max's body was donated to Northeast Ohio Universities College of Medicine to further the science of medicine.

He leaves behind, his beloved wife of 53 years, Maria; sister, Francine Hathout of Alexandria, Egypt; cousin, Oswald Menassa of Alexandria, Egypt; daughter, Lucie Pettis of Glenwood, Md.; son, Alex Susan of Wadsworth; grandchildren, Max and Tina Pettis and Natalie and John Menassa; and his loyal Labrador, Chuck.

Calling hours from 2 to 4 p.m. SUNDAY at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Road, Fairlawn, followed by a prayer service at 4 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association or Humane Society of Greater Akron.
