Melinda Hampton Mindy Casey came bounding into this life on March 4, 1951 as the first born "flower face" to Roger and Teresa Casey in Springfield, Ohio. She grew up in walking distance of most of her cousins and many became her best friends. Soon after, Christopher Marion, Ann Jonathon Sandvick, Mary, and Jim Jane joined her in a house filled with love and affection.
As soon as Mindy figured out what reading was, she engaged it with fervor for her lifetime. There are many great "Mindy" reading stories. She passed this lifelong love of books on to her children.
Mindy spent much of her life as an Akron resident. She graduated from Firestone High School in 1969 and then attended and graduated from The University of Akron 1973, where she was an active member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She met her husband, Joel Hampton, at a sorority-fraternity social in 1970. It was "love at first sight" and they began a loving relationship that would last a very happy 40 years. She loved tradition and was married on the six-year anniversary of the day they met. Mindy was a loving and devoted wife, incomparable mother and loyal friend. She took motherhood very seriously and supplemented her natural mothering skills with research and practicality. She and Joel have three children, Christopher, Kathryn and Alicia, who will miss her dearly and constantly.
She was deeply compassionate and committed to helping others. She and Joel sponsored the Christmas celebrations of many families over the years, served numerous dinners for people in need, and provided the funding for a number of cleft lip and palate operations through Mindy's favorite charity Smile Train. She also devoted many hours to volunteer tutoring in English as a Second Language.
She found great joy in the simple things in life. She loved gardening, watching for birds in her many birdhouses, and spending time doing anything and everything with and for family. Her children often joked that if she were offered a cruise to the Bahamas or a day at Cedar Point, she would choose the day at Cedar Point- her absolute favorite annual family destination.
Mindy bravely and boldly battled breast cancer for 14 years. It cannot and will not be said that she lost her fight. She beat so many odds and lived all her years to the fullest. Mindy gave cancer a run for its money and blessed her family by her courageousness.
She is also survived by her loving mother, Teresa Casey; mother-in-law, Alice H. Price; brothers-in-law, Greg, Steve Young Ju, and Gifford Hampton Patti; sisters-in-law, Debbie Thorne Don and Michele Hampton Ramon Stewart; many wonderful nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly and countless caring friends and neighbors.
