Michael Francis d'Amico, age 75, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2018.
Mike was born on February 26, 1943 to Alice Kearins d'Amico and Michael G. d'Amico. He was born and raised in Hoboken, NJ and spent his summers in East Durham, NY caring for property owned by the family since the 1930s. Mike graduated from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, received his master's degree from Rutgers University, and earned his PhD in business administration at Texas Tech University. After a brief stint at Michigan Technological University, he headed to Akron, Ohio, where he was a professor of marketing at the University of Akron for about 35 years. Mike co-authored several marketing text books, published many journal and business press articles, and won a number of teaching awards.
Mike was committed to volunteering and served his community in a variety of ways, big and small. Over the years he served on the board of directors of Our Lady of the Elms, Goodwill Industries, and Akron Symphony Orchestra. Mike was perhaps best known for his love of comedy a" he was always good for a joke and a hearty laugha" and his encyclopedic knowledge of pretty much everything. He loved music of all kinds and especially appreciated classical performances, going out for a good meal (preferably Italian food), road trips, and reading everything and anything he could get his hands on. Mike didn't like a fuss and hated dressing up, unless he could wear a novelty tie. He was an exceptionally loyal, kind and generous friend, and never failed to send colorful email greetings for every holiday throughout the year. He put other people first, especially his daughter and his wife, and for that they are truly grateful.
Mike is survived by his wife, whom he loved and adored with all of his heart, Patricia Mullen d'Amico of Copley, Ohio; his daughter, Alyse d'Amico; son-in law, Christopher Goff; and grandsons, Thomas Michael Goff, and Robert Maxwell Goff of Watertown, MA. He is also survived by Kathleen Schmatz, mother of his daughter. He is preceded in death by his brother, Robert Anthony Michael d'Amico, of Hoboken, NJ.
