Nela Harper Carter, 102, passed away Sunday, January 3, 2010 at Western Reserve Masonic Community in Medina, Ohio.
She was born June 13, 1907 in Harman, West Virginia to the late Minor and Clara Cooper Harper. After earning her teaching credentials at Shephard College, Nela taught two years in a one-room schoolhouse, then moved to Akron in 1928 and decided to become a hairdresser instead. In 1936, Mrs. Carter married Charlie Head and together they owned and operated a real estate and insurance business for more than 30 years. They traveled a lot and after he passed away in 1976, she assisted Dr. Harvey of the First United Methodist Church in Akron in conducting group tours around the world. The few places that she hasn't visited would make a very short list. In 1980, Mrs. Carter married Bishop Holstein, but a bleeding ulcer took him after only a year and a half. In 1983 she married Warren E. Carter, founder of Carter Lumber. They spent their summers in Akron and wintered the first ten years in Hawaii and last seven years in Florida. Mr. Carter passed away in 2000 at the age of 102.
Mrs. Carter was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Akron, the Akron City Club and the Eastern Star. She was active in social functions at Western Reserve Masonic Community and kept up on current topics and issues until she passed.
She was preceded in death by her three husbands; step-daughter, Lillian Sackett; step-sons, Van Carter and Jim Carter; brothers, Fred, Stelman, Harry, and Albert; sisters, Erma, Zetta, Sally, Evelyn and Virginia; she is survived by her step daughters-in-law, Gloria Carter and Minnie Carter; many step grandchildren and great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and friends.
The family would like to thank Hospice of Medina County, especially Mona and Donna, the hospice volunteers, and the staff at Western Reserve Masonic Community for the great care the past few months for Nela.
Funeral services will be held at 11 am, Wednesday at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., Akron with Rev. Doug Meek and Rev. Becki Verbridge officiating.
