Edith Patricia Vargo, nee Nicol, died on November 20, 2021, shortly after celebrating her 90th birthday with family and friends. She was born on September 17, 1931, to William Howard and Hilda Cummings Nicol of Cuyahoga Falls.
Pat graduated from Cuyahoga Falls High School in 1949, and St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1952. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in
Nursing Education from The Ohio State University in 1955, and her master’s degree in Education from Kent State University in 1987. She worked at People’s Hospital, Northside Hospital, Community Skilled Nursing Home, and Country Place as well as volunteering for the Red Cross for many years.
She was a compassionate and skilled nurse who generously provided care and support for patients, friends, and family members who needed help.
Pat loved spending time with her family; she was a devoted and busy mother of eight children and grandmother to 13 grandchildren. She inspired and encouraged them to work hard, help others, and remain a close-knit and loving family throughout their lives. She was an avid reader, a lifelong learner, and had a wonderful sense of humor. She enjoyed needlework and being with her friends. She was a founding member of the Witty Knitter’s Guild. In her knitting obsession she made hundreds (literally!) of baby blankets, sweaters, and Caps for Kids, along with many beautiful quilts, cross stitch, and needlepoint masterpieces. She rarely missed her monthly card club with friends that met for over 50 years in Warren, Ohio. She was also an enthusiastic Buckeye who enjoyed following Ohio State’s football team and was a fan of the Cleveland Indians and Browns. We knew never to schedule activities during an Indians game!
Pat is preceded in death by her former husband Frank P. Vargo, brothers William and Robert Nicol, and daughter Mary Agnes Vargo. She is survived by her children Susan Kunas (Dennis), Kay Bloom (Brad), Paul Vargo (Amy), Frank Vargo, Patrick Vargo (Eileen), Edie Vargo (Scott Larson), and Sarah Vargo. She was a proud grandmother to Kristopher (Hayley) and Keenan Brooks (Shannon McDavid); Julia, Laura, and Matthew Kunas; Lily and Oscar Vargo; Andrew and Joe Vargo; David and Jane Larson; and Muriel and Paul Sabourin.
The Patricia Nicol Vargo Excellence in Nursing Scholarship has been created in her memory at the William Howard Nicol School of Nursing at Portage Lakes Career Center. Memorial donations in her name may be sent to Portage Lakes Career Center, 4401 Shriver Rd., Uniontown, OH 44685, Attn: Treasurer’s Office.
