Paul Gailor McDermott
Paul Gailor McDermott died of natural causes at his home in Akron on Thursday, August 14, 2008. He was aged 94.
Born in Stillwater, N.Y. in September 1913, Paul McDermott graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. in 1936. He immediately began working as a chemical engineer for Dunlop Tire in Buffalo, N.Y. He relocated to Akron in 1941 where he was first employed by B.F. Goodrich in their latex rubber facility. Three months later he was hired by the Maurice A. Knight Chemical Company of Akron with whom he stayed for the rest of his career. He became president and CEO in 1981 and presided over the sale of that company to the Koch Engineering Company later that year.
In 1951, Paul married Lulu Weeks Knight, a daughter of Maurice A. Knight. She died in 1985. Paul McDermott established the Maurice A. Knight Scholarship at Akron University in 1997 in memory of his father-in-law. A long time resident of Akron, he was well known to many of the city's professional, civic, and community organizations. He was one of the earliest residents of the University Club where he lived for ten years and later served as secretary, treasurer and president. He was also a long time member of the Akron City Club until it closed. He was a regular performer at the Weathervane Theater between 1941-1945. He was a member of the American Chemical Society and the Chemical Engineering Society with Emeritus status in both. He had been a senior member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers since 1940 and was elected chairman of the Akron Chapter in 1949. He was a member of the Mason Montgomery Lodge in Stillwater, N.Y. He served as president of the Junior Grange on Malta, N.Y. and was a member of the Senior Grange for many years.
He is survived by his daughter, Paula Weeks Weatherburn Baker and her husband, Roger, of New York and Florida.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., with Dr. Donard M. Engle officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour before services.
